Sequoyah Caverns....adventures below the surface

If you don’t mind a short 3 hour drive, then do not miss out on Sequoyah Caverns in Valley Head, Al. Here holds beautiful caves to be explored, fishing, gem mining, animal watching, hiking to Lookout Point, fishing and camping.

Exploring the caverns is Sequoyah Caverns’ most popular attraction. There are amazing reflection pools and many intriguing passageways. You can take a walk on the footpaths through years of natural history. Over the years, nature has transformed the caverns into unbelievable beauty. There are spectacular formations and rock designs not to go unseen.

Guided tours of the caverns are available on a daily basis. There is the Looking Glass Tour which departs every hour. This walks you through the ancient cavern to see the many reflection pools and passageways. There is the Lantern Tour. This allows you to experience the caverns like the old days. Guided lantern tours are available evenings, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Then there is the most popular group tour, the Wild Cave Adventure. This tour requires reservations and is open to groups of five or more. You get to adventure into parts of the cave that few get to see. There are also overnight trips available for Scouts and Youth groups.

For those looking to do other activities, there is “Mine for Precious Gems.” This is a great activity for parents and their kids. You can mine for multicolored gems just like the settlers did years ago.

For the hiker at heart, take a stroll up the simple 1.5 mile trail to Lookout Point where you can enjoy the beautiful views of Lookout Mountain and the valley. This is the perfect place to take a picnic or take advantage of a beautiful location for pictures.

If you want to make this a weekend trip, there are 85 campground sites and a pool.

Sequoyah Caverns is open year-round, Monday through Saturday from 8:30-5:00 and on Sunday from 11- 5:00 (closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day).
