Summer is a time for most students to sit back and relax after a grueling year of homework, quizzes, tests and finals. For some, summer means sticking around Auburn for their summer school sessions. However, are students attending class because they need to catch up or do they just want to hang around Auburn as much as they can? It's a mixed review.

For many reasons, students wish to extend their stay at Auburn throughout the summer. One reason may be that they want a lighter workload in the fall. That is why Melissa attended the first mini-mester of the summer school session. She says that it is better having a lighter workload in the fall because of the football season. Students don’t want to study on a Friday or Saturday. They would rather tailgate with family and friends, and watch the Tigers defeat the opposing team. Having a harder and heavier workload during that time can distract you from one of the most important activities of a student’s college career.

A lighter workload during football season is not the only reason students take part in summer school. Adam, an upcoming senior, is taking summer school because is a bit behind in classes. This is not uncommon for most college students. Today, it takes an average of five years for college students to graduate. Instead of adding on extra years, students like Adam rather continue taking classes year-round in hopes of graduating a little sooner.

Some students, like Caleb, would rather just have another excuse to stay in Auburn a little longer. For Caleb, he finds Auburn to be more interesting and fun in the summer than his hometown of Scottsboro, Ala. Auburn’s student life in the summer is different from its regular school session. More relaxing and intimate, summer sessions at Auburn provide students with a different experience that is just as memorable as the fall.

Whether you are taking classes for fun or trying to catch up, summer sessions at Auburn are always filled with fun. Maybe next summer, try picking up a couple of courses and experience it for yourself.
