WEGL is Auburn University’s student operated radio station. It broadcasts daily on 91.1 and can be heard in the following counties in Alabama: Lee, Macon, Russell and Tallapoossa and in Muscogee County, GA.
WEGL is a SAP program which means that it receives funding from the student activity fees that students pay with their tuition. The Student Government Association regulates the distribution of this money among the various SAP programs.
WEGL had its first broadcast on April 25, 1971; however, it was not Auburn University’s first radio station. In 1922, WMAV started broadcasting in Auburn as a student operated radio station.
WEGL’s staff is made-up of college students from a variety of majors.
Meaghan Davis, a senior in communications, just recently became involved with WEGL. With graduation approaching, Davis wanted to have something for her resume and also gain some experience in her major.
After talking to Chris Adler, WEGL station manager, Davis began preparing to DJ a show for WEGL. She said the preparation took about a week.
“You have to learn how to use the board and then take a test and pass it with a score of 40 out of 50 or 80 percent.” Davis said.
Davis had her first show this week. She said it was OK – a little rough trying to figure everything out for the first time.
Davis has not selected a name for her show yet.
“I have been trying to come up with one, but they are really corny.” Davis said.
Davis would like to increase WEGL’s listeners. She has several ideas for improvement. She would like to do a talk show that would include a movie review and wacky news stories.
