What is sustainability?

According to Wikipedia, sustainability is the “potential longevity of vital human ecological support systems, such as the planet’s climate systems…”

The issue of sustainability has become a hot topic throughout the world in recent years. People are being encouraged to “go green.” Local grocery stores are offering more and more organic and locally grown produce. They are also offering environmentally friendly grocery bags that you bring back on future visits.

We are being encouraged to use different light bulbs, buy all natural products, carpool and overall just be more user-friendly to the environment.

This trend has now found its way to Auburn University.

Lauren Hayes, Student Government Association President, has started the Sustainability Initiative at Auburn. This was part of her campaign platform to make Auburn University a better school.

Sam Nicolle, Student Government Association Director of Initiatives, is head of the committee that is going to take this initiative into full swing beginning in the fall.

During Welcome Week, Nicolle said the SGA plans to hold recycling seminars and have a sustainability pledge for students to sign. Nicolle would like to see this banner be displayed outside of the new Auburn University Student Union.

In addition to these activities, the SGA will continue to promote sustainability throughout the year. There will be a fact of the month and also a “Did you know?” campaign.

This campaign will consist of little known facts about sustainability on Auburn’s campus. There will be fliers and posters scattered throughout campus with these facts.

One of the facts that Nicolle thinks students will find interesting is that you can print double-sided in university computer labs.

So, what is sustainability? Even if you still aren’t quite sure what it is, just wait for the SGA to kick-off this initiative, and you shouldn’t have any more doubts.
